We have annie lowrey and nbc senior political reporter perry bakon jr. he joins us -- both of them join us from washington, d.c., this morning. perry, you wrote about this virginia question this week. we just had the lieutenant governor on. he wasnt committing to anything as best i could tell, he just said were going to look at it, were going to look at it. youve been looking at this. is this where you expect things to go, executive action by terry mcauliffe to expand medicaid? >> i dont think t...

Hillary clinton and for the country if we have another candidate from the left, whether its bernie sanders or elizabeth warren. i disagree with jerry brown. i think primaries are good. i can be untroubled by the invisible primary thats going on and also think at the same time that primaries are good. and i feel like president obama became a better candidate as a result of the primary. clintons campaign i think learned from the primary, hopefully in a way that she can build on. i think romney bec...

I want you to explain it to people, obviously cochran and mcdaniel are the two we know about in the race but theres a third candidate and theres a possibility that no one gets the 50% they need and were talking about this race in three weeks time. explain. >> reporter: exactly. 50% is a threshold for this race to win. if they dont theyll have three more weeks and will be very discouraging to voters here. people here ive talked to are very eager to see this race end so three weeks more will not b...

>> lets start with this, perry. on the scandal heroic as weve stipulated, not necessarily tied to the organization, the campaigns themselves, but as you go into this home stretch tomorrow, politically how is that playing out first? >> its become the focus of the race. if you know thad cochran, hes this slowtalking, very relaxed member of congress who you almost have a hard time hearing him speak occasionally he speaks so softly. surprisingly hes getting into a race where this is becoming so pers...

>> what is weird really quick is that cochrans response seems to be to kind of run on the fact that he has been in congress for a long time. let me let you listen real quick to mr. cochran. >> when a republican majority as chairman of the appropriations committee i can help stop wasteful spending and make sure our conservative principles are at the forefront of our policy decisions. [ applause ] >> and, of course, perry, the irony being that the appropriations committee is the spenders in congre...

Within the gop on full display, and there have been personalities attacks on both sides. mcdaniels supporters should have every reason to cheer but the story of this race is being dragged down by one big bizarre twist. clayton kelly, a political blogger and nic daniel supporter, was arrested after he allegedly broke into a nursing home and photographed senator cochrans wife, who suffers from dementia. the photograph was apparently part of a scheme to be used in an anti-cochran video. three other...

Spending millions of millions of dollars on your behalf. >> to you, perry, what are the polls looking like? is thad cochran in trouble in mississippi? >> he is definitely in trouble. polls show a very close race, photo finish. we dont know who is going to win. seems like mcdaniels has a little momentum. the scandal has not seemed to hurt him as much as i thought it would. it is very close. it is not going to be like beven and mcconnell which was very decisive. no matter if cochran wins or loses ...

Clinton is that it seems to be all politics all the time, from what we know about this book chapter, its pure political spin and shes more focused on blaming the so-called vast right wing conspiracy than on the terrorists. >> right. okay, well goldie, steve, perry, back with us and jonathan allen joins us, co-author of the "new york times" best seller, "hrc." appropriate to this conversation. so im going to start with you, jonathan. playing politics here? really? shes playing politics. we just h...

For 2016 where the chamber of commerce, establishment republicans, want to see an immigration law done and where their voters dont necessarily want that particularly, their base voters. well see had that on a bunch of different issues but i think thats the basic thrust of whats going on. >> perry, now specific to obamacare and connect, you spent some time in kentucky and you did some reporting where you talk to people who said, "i hate obamacare but i love connect." for mcconnell whos running ob...

But today, it is republican ball game day. >> to that point, perry, it strikes me, was it a good thing then for them to leak -- we all -- but to leak it to a reporter and get it out early sort of as a prebuttal, but to the actual release of the book on june 10th? >> hillary clinton is playing politics, too. this book is being rolled out very carefully. this book is part of a likely presidential campaign. i think the republicans are appropriately obsessed with someone who is running for president...
