Prawn farm site in Sg Segari approved for development, says Perak MB

IPOH: A prawn farming site in Sungai Segari had received prior approval from the Perak State Agriculture Development (SADC), says Datuk Saarani Mohamad. The Perak Mentri Besar who is also SADC chairman, said he was informed that several meetings were conducted between SADC and the land office to approve several aquaculture companies. These companies were allowed to rent the site to build the prawn farm. On Jan 27, we were informed that the area was used by Persatuan Aktivis Sahabat Alam (Kuasa), while the state government gave approval to SADC to set up aquaculture farming, he said on Sunday (Jan 31). On Saturday (Jan 30), Kuasa and villagers near Sungai Segari in Manjung claimed that an excavator cleared a site where they had planted about 7,000 mangrove trees.

IPOH: The state government has no intention to destroy the mangrove trees planted by villagers near Sungai Segari, says Datuk Saarani Mohamad. The Perak Mentri Besar and chairman of Perak State Agriculture Development Corporation (SADC) suggested a new place for the planting project to continue. He said the aquaculture farm project being developed at Sungai Segari, Manjung has actually been approved since last year. “In December last year, we appointed nine companies to set up aquaculture farms at our land in Sungai Segari. “To set up the farm, they need to clear the area. It was only then that these companies noticed that mangrove trees were planted by Persatuan Aktivis Sahabat Alam (Kuasa) and nearby villagers,” he told reporters after visiting the site on Sunday (Jan 31).

Environment and Water Minister, Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said this was based on initial investigation conducted by the Perak Department of Environment (DOE) at the forest reserve on Monday (Jan 18) and Tuesday (Jan 19). The investigation also found six violations of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approval conditions involving earthworks carried out without following the Land-Disturbing Pollution Prevention and Mitigation Measures (LD-P2M2), he tweeted on Wednesday (Jan 20).
