Playing jazz with sparseness and space was, for one particular player, his path to greatness.

Jamal was born in Pittsburgh, broke through with his small group music in Chicago in the 1950s, and recorded scores of records through 2016 — a 65-year recording career. He died April 16.

His group became the house band for Pershing Hotel in Chicago, and one night in January 1958 they recorded more than 40 songs.

Ahmad Jamal, the pianist and composer died on April 16 at his home in Ashley Falls, Massachusetts. He was 92.
