raises new questions. good morning, welcome to "mornings on 2". it is sunday, july 21, i am claudine wong. >> i am mike mibach. we will get over to rosemary orozco with the forecast. very similar to how we woke up yesterday. and we are waking up with a thicker cloud deck. mostly sunny skies for the afternoon. by the afternoon a few degrees cooler than where we sat yesterday. in the extends the forecast, the possibility of a few sprinkles, we will have more on this coming up. we begin with developing news from the peninsula. >> in san mateo county, it is back open. this accident killed a good samaritan. this is near woodside road and farm hill boulevard. the chp said the driver of a honda rear understanded a vehicle. a good samaritan then stopped and got out of his car to help. then another vehicle came by and hit him. >> it is the good samaritan that stopped to assist the parties in the original crash. then that party was struck by another vehicle as he was, after that on the freeway. a woman with the victim was taken to the hospital with emotional trauma. they he suffered injuries from the crash. the rest and the -- they arrested the driver of the honda on dui charges. san francisco police say a shootout in the middle of the street left one person dead and one in serious condition. this is across from a play ground. alex savidge is joining us live with more on the investigation. alex? >> well, good morning. the deadly shoot out happened in the middle of the street in the middle of o'farrell and larkin and it is next to the playground. one man was killed and another critically wounded here. >> two groups were involved in the moving gun battle. but san francisco don't it believe any innocent bystanders were hit. the shooting started around 8:40 last night. they saw two groups of armed men shooting at each other. >> they came out and pulled their guns and that's when shots were fired at them. the chief said they didn't hit any of the gunman. >> they were automobile to take the shooters into custody and brought the dangerous gun battle to a close. >> by all accounts of the officers, numerous people in the area. again, it is terrific they came on the scene when they did. this could have been a lot worse. >> reporter: they found two guns and none of the people have been identified in the shootout. that includes the person taken into custody and the person who was killed and the person taken to the hospital. at this point they can't say if it is gang-related and if they were shooting at each other in the first place. there was some kind of dispute and they decided to settle it by shooting at each other in the middle of a busy street. in the end, they don't believe innocent bystanders were hit by gunfire. >> alex savidge. ktvu, channel 2 news. there is new information about the limousine fire that killed people on the bridge. nine women were celebrating the wedding. now it has talked to the estranged wife of the limo driver. the driver kept calling her that night and they were arguing shortly before the fire. this raises questions about whether the driver was too distracted when they tried to alert him the back of the vehicle was filling up with smoke. the chp is going to issue a report about the cause of the fire focusing on the friction from the drive shaft. this crash on the antioch freeway sent someone to the hospital. he was in second place chasing the reeder when he made contact with another car. murphy's vehicle hit the wall and rolled over. they had a tough part there with the car to free him. >> sometimes these things are opened and sometimes this happens am and you make contact. murphy was airlifted with major injuries. they suspended the race after the crash. >> day of action resulted in mass demonstrations including a few peaceful ones in the bay area. >> darkness can't drive out darkness. hate can't drive out hates. only love and light. the new amphitheater, a candlelight vigil was held to remember the life of trayvon martin and other young victims of gun violence. they wrote notes of hope and peace. there were demonstrations days earlier. this was a conclusion and was nonviolent. >> we give out into the universe for trayvon's family and all of the young people who find themselves receiving a mess san jose that their lives actually are hanging in the balance. >> oakland police report no arrests in any of the events yesterday which included an annual bike ride that turned into a rally for trayvon north continue. they made sure there were not any troubles. they walked behind a march from the plaza to lake merit. they were raising attention to marissa alexander. a woman who was jailed for firing a warning shot. they want her released understand the stab your ground law. ever jean quan spoke at one of the rallies. she attended a demonstration. and when quan stepped up to the microphone, they tried to shout her down. the radicals never liked me, that's okay. >> i don't know that they here anyone's mess sack. she believes the rallies are necessary and important. and hopes it will be the end of racial profiling. more than 100 people turned out. they held handwritten signs. and a demonstration is scheduled at 6:00 tonight. they are encouraging people to wear hooded sweatshirts at the events in the bay. they have become a support for martin who was wearing that when he was shot and killed by george zim are man. >> trayvon's mother took part in two demonstrations in new york city. in 30 minutes, how martin plans to carry on her son's legacy. they have seen a person running from a deadly shooting. a shot spotter alert went off. >> they found a latino man dead. one witness reported seeing a man running through martin luther king after the shooting. he was wearing a red hat and dark green car was seen in the area. anyone with information is asked to call police. we have an update to a shooting in oakland. where a young girl was killed and three others hurt. >> she was at a sleep over when she was shot and killed late wednesday night. covert spoke for the first time and broke down in tears and talked about the shootingen and the loss of alicia. >> her 7-year-old daughter was shot in the shoulder and her 4-year-old son was grazed in the stomach. the grandmother was also wounded. >> me were just kid. man, i don't even know, what can i say? that arrived and they got out of their car. pulled their guns and shots were fired at them. police returned fire and the chief says that the officers did not hit any of the gunmen. >> police were able between them. obviously, they have decided to settle it. and they didn't care who was around. >> now, officers did find two guns at the scene last night and recovered those. the man killed in the interstate 280 in san mateo are open after a multivehicle crash killed a good samaritan. it happened before 2:45 on southbound 280 near farm hill boulevard. chp says the driver of a honda rear ended a vehicle. a good samaritan stopped and got out to help. another vehicle hit him. a woman with him was taken to the hospital for emotional trauma. the chp arrested the driver of the honda on dui charges. southbound lanes were closed for 3 1/2 hours. a crash at antioch speedway sent what driver to the hospital. he was in second place chasing the leader when he made contact with another car. murphy's vehicle hit the wall and rolled over. emergency responders had to cut off part of the car to free him. contact with another car down the front stretch. these are open wheel cars and sometimes you make contact. we site it a lot. >> murphy was airlifted to the hospital with major injuries. race organizers suspended the race after the crash. new information about the limousine fire that killed five passengers. nine women were in the vehicle on may 4th celebrating a wedding. the mercury news is reporting it has talked to the estranged wife of the limo driver. she says the driver kept calling her and they were arguing shortly before the fire. when contacted about that information, prosecutors told the mercury news they want to follow-up on it to see if the driver was distracted when passengers tried to alert him that the back of the vehicle was filling up with smoke. the driver says he is not authorized to talk about the case. chp is expected to issue a report examining the cause of the fire focusing on friction from the drive shaft. a shoot out in the middle of the street left a person dead and another in serious condition. it happened near o farrell. police say three men were shooting at each other. one of the men died at the scene and the other was injured. a third man ran off but was taken into custody. an officer shot at one of the suspects but the bullet did not hit him. >> whatever these people had between them, obviously they had decided to settle it and they didn't really care who was around. >> police say they are still investigating why the men were shooting at each other. they say it's too early to know if it was gang related. a day of action resulted in mass demonstrations across the country including a few peaceful ones in the bay area. >> expecting about 15,000 people to come down to walk and fight hiv around the bay area. this is an important walk for a lot of people. many are walking with teams and companies that support walkers but a lot of people walking for personal reasons, people in their lives impacted by aids and hiv. with that being said, let me bring in the ceo of san francisco aids foundation. the event today goes to support your foundation and the work you do. first of all, how much money? you are crunching the numbers. how much money do you think you will raise today. >> depends on how much people show up with today. that is usually a big amount. we will be in the range of 2 to 2 1/2 million dollars. a successful event for san francisco aids foundation and 25 hiv aids organizations. >> where does the money go to? >> for our case we have a large testing clinic, counseling programs, a housing assistance program. we do all sorts of community education. we are the organization that does the syringe exchange on the streets of san francisco. we will distribute hundreds of thousands of condoms. a wide variety of community education, direct services for people impacted by hiv and the community at large. >> the goal for you, long term is limiting transmission of the disease. >> yes. >> what is the ambitious goal you set. >> san francisco aids has a goal to cut in half the number of hiv infections by 2015. in san francisco, we are really making a lot of progress there. is roughly one new infection a day in san francisco. we have a population hiv positive of 16,000 people. only half of those 16,000 [ male announcer ] add a wireless receiver. call to get u-verse tv for just $19 a month with qualifying bundles. rethink possible. mostly sun start over san jose. currently 60 degrees. expect 81 for the afternoon. well, two u.s. military aircraft have dropped bombs near the great barrier reef off the australian coast. the two planes had to abandon the bombs because they were running out of fuel and feared they wouldn't be able to land unless they dropped their weight. two were nonexplosive. the other two were explosive but were disarmed before they dropped. broken water mains smashed windows and downed power lines. that's the scene in new zealand following a major earthquake. the quake came in at 6.9 but recently downgraded to a 6.5. this happened near wellington. people were running for cover. so far no reports of serious injuries. the last major earthquake there happened in 2011 in christchurch. 185 people were killed. next month hayward plans to demolish a building that has been deemed seismically unsafe. a team of scientists and volunteers will ask residents in surrounding neighborhoods about installing seismic monitors on their property. scientist say they will use it in hopes of studying the fault. a small college in ohio is closed after it was hit by a tornado. a twister packing 110 miles per hour winds touched down on the campus east of cleveland. there is damage to a science center, library and part of the athletic center collapsed. no injuries were reported. that tornado was 200 yards wide and traveled more than a mile. this morning in east cleveland, ohio, police resumed their search for more victims of a suspected serial killer. investigators found a body on friday and two yesterday. police believe the victims were all women. the bodies were wrapped in heavy plastic bags. officers discovered the first victim in a locked garage. the other two bodies were discovered inside an abandoned home two doors away. >> something like this is upsetting. not only for me but my children and grandchildren. >> wrapped up in heavy plastic bags -- >> police arrested a registered sex offender michael madison for the homicides. detectives say he told them he fascinated with another serial killer who was convicted of killing 11 women and hiding their remains around his home. the senior editor of "rolling stone" apologized for a comment he posted on twitter in response to the magazine cover featuring the boston bombing suspect. the tweet is too graphic to show you but he is sorry for the inappropriate language. the magazine is standing by its cover. people say the it puts the suspect in a glamorous light. pope francis is traveling to brazil to lead world youth day celebrations. workers are building a huge altar where the pope will celebrate mass in front of thousands. check out the beach where people are building sand sculptures of francis. contra costa county is remembering the firefighters that died in the line of duty at a fire protection district. there is a special service at the wall in concord. it lists the names of 16 members of the department that lost their lives on the job since 1969. the ceremony begins at 9:30 this morning. in ten minutes from now the san francisco fire department will hold two large scale high rise drills. this is video from a similar drill last summer. both at 120 car any street. the first at 9:30, the second at 1:30. firefighters will work with building managers and neighborhood response teams. some east bay organizations will be getting help to get homeless vets off the streets. lawmakers say three organizations will get more than $3 million in federal grants from the u.s. veterans affairs services. that money will go to preventing veterans from preventing veterans from being homeless. it will get vets off the streets now into jobs and homes. bay area salaries are not keeping up with the growing cost of living. according to a state department survey, average wages have gone up 1% in the past year. that is the slowest wage growth in more than a decade. the report says that despite the slow growth in wages, the bay area is still one of the nation's best paid regions. the bay area seagull population is looming. you made gluten-free cereals in a whole bunch of yummy flavors. cinnamon chex and honey nut chex are two of our favorites. when my husband found the chocolate one, we were in cereal heaven. the only problem is, with so many great flavors you're making it very hard to choose. your fans, the mcgregor family. 'cause we love chex. seagulls are a pesky problem in the bay area. according to the mercury news there has been an explosion in the local seagull population. that is creating problems as the goals collide with airplanes, threaten wetlands restoration and eat tiny birds. volunteers use whistles to try to scare them away. the number of california golds has jumped from 24 in 1980 to 53,000 today. the bay area is home to the second largest population of california golds in the world. the san francisco giants organization is striking out in its effort to stop the seagulls at the ballpark. they scavage over those items left over by fans. the team is searching for a human solution. the giants are worried that the seagulls will get more aggressive and someone will get hurt. the mother of trayvon martin spoke at two rallies yesterday in new york city. reporter matt king on her campaign to carry on her son's legacy. >> my son died without even knowing who his killer was, without even knowing who murdered him. >> reporter: trayvon martin's mother sybrina fulton told a national radio audience of her grief, resolve and hopes for the future. >> trayvon was no burglar. he reexamination of stand your ground self-defense laws. >> i can see that stand your ground law may be something that needs to be reviewed by the florida legislature or any other legislature that has passed such legislation. >> he made those comments earlier this morning on cnn's "face the nation." stand your ground laws have been back in the spotlight since george zimmerman was acquitted in the death of trayvon martin. 30 states have some form of stand your ground which give people legal rights in cases of self-defense. this morning church leaders in oakland are urging people to attend an african-american service and show solidarity with people of another race. they say african americans are being unfairly profiled and everyone is welcome at church no matter race or color. two officers shot and killed a man following a chase. the officers tried to stop a hummer for a traffic violation at grand circle friday night. the officers pursued the hummer until it got stuck on an embankment. the driver opened fire on the officers who returned fire and fatally shot the man. the issue of gun control goes before lawmakers. the cloverleaf city council will vote on whether to reinstate the federal assault weapons band. they are lobbying sonoma county to adopt resolutions in favor of a proposal by senator diane feinstein. some people say local councils should not weigh in on national issues. east palo alto police are looking for a person running from a deadly shooting. a shot spotter alert went off on larkspur drive. police found a man dead in the driver's seat of a car. one witness reported seeing a man running through martin luther king park after the shooting. he was wearing a red hat and white shirt. anyone with information is asked to call police. and we have an update to the shooting in oakland where a young girl was killed and three others were hurt. 8-year-old alyasha was at a sleep over at brea colbert's home when she was shot and killed. colbert spoke for the first time to ktvu and broke down in tears when she talked about the loss of alyasha. colbert's children are recovering from their injuries. her 7-year-old daughter alyasha was shot in the shoulder. antoine was grazed in the stomach and the children's grandmother was wounded. >> these are kids, so innocent. man, i don't even know really -- what can i say, this is a tragedy. i just feel so bad, so bad for what happened. >> colbert was at work when the shooting happened. she doesn't know why anyone would target her home. police tell us they are looking for a break in the case and there is a $35,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a killer. new developments in the asiana plane crash. according to the chronicle, the family of the three teenagers killed hired a law firm. they are being represented by an attorney from a new york based firm that specializes in aviation cases. in another development, asiana announced they hired bms global. the firm will be responsible for the recovery of luggage and other personal belongings from the crash. once the items are collected they will be organized, cleaned and returned to the passengers. the body of an east bay woman missing since thursday has been found. the 92-year-old was reported missing after she set out to go to church but never arrived. searchers located her body at the bottom of a steep ravine. there is no word on what may have caused the accident. a $5,000 reward is being offered for information about a dog poisoning case in san francisco. earlier this month someone left poisoned meatballs in the twin peaks neighborhoods. one dog died after meeting the meatballs. police think they were intentionally left out to kill dogs. public work crews patched up a sinkhole in the mission district. the hole was reported yesterday. it was about three feet deep. crews had to make a temporary fix to make it safer. they will go back tomorrow to figure out what caused it. sewer rates are going up in daly city. a 9% a year increase for the next three years. this year the average bill will go up by about 3.30 a month. city leaders say the hike was necessary to pay for maintenance to the city's sewer system. >> thunderstorms could threaten the work of firefighters battling a wildfire in southern california. the fire in the mountains near palm springs is 40% contained. the storms could bring much needed rain. there is concern that a mix of wind, lie tenge could fan the flames. >> we have thunderstorms coming in. cooler temperatures, a chance of precipitation that will help the firefighters out on the ground. they need to keep a head's up on the wave of the lightning. >> investigators say the wildfire was human cause but they won't say if it was started accidentally or intentionally. the fire, which began last monday stretches 42 square miles and forced the evacuation of 6,000 people. tomorrow the name of the person that rescued a man from a burning home will be released. the fire broke out in her cue less. firefighters say a 29-year-old man driving by saw the house go up in flames. they say he forced his way inside, found a man asleep in the back bedroom and concerned about her seat before that ride took off. a witness says the woman, who was killed, told a park employee that she wasn't secured correctly. according to the witness, the park employee responded by saying as long as you heard it click you are fine. a safety analyst says the lap bars should click more than once. they have not confirmed whether it gave way. that ride is closed and will remain closed during the investigation. happening now, opening ceremonies got underway for this year's san francisco aids walk. alex savage is live in golden gate park where thousands are getting ready to walk. alex? >> good morning. everybody is in a good mood. a fun atmosphere in golden gate park. let me show you the scene behind me. this is sharon meadow. everybody is getting warmed up for the 27th annual san francisco aids walk. this is part of the opening ceremonies for the vent. the walk will kick off shortly. everyone is here to raise important funds. participants are checking in at this point and getting set for that walk that will take place soon. we talked to one woman taking part today. she told me that this is more than just about raising money but awareness. >> becoming familiar with the does. you can make a difference in someone else's life. >> there are more than 700 teens taking part in the 10-k walk that happens today. it goes through golden gate park. it takes two hours to finish up. organizers are expecting to raise about $2.5 million. all of that money goes to support the san francisco aids foundation as well as about 30 other different organizations in the bay area that fight the spread of hiv and aids. i talked a short time ago to the ceo of the san francisco aids foundation. he told me in particular he is inspired by the diverse crowd out here. >> what is neat, a lot of the people here weren't born when the aids epidemic started. it's important that they understand the history of hiv and aids, particularly in san francisco. san francisco was the first city in the united states where it reached epic proportions. this commemorates them as well as raising funds to do the important work that we need to do to end the disease. >> reporter: now, along with this being a fund-raising event, for many that come down and walk, this is a chance to honor loved ones, people that they have known in their lives, friends, relatives lost to aids. this is a chance, an annual reminder about the lives that have been lost and the importance of stopping the spread of this disease. the san francisco aids walk gets underway. they will start walking through
