Aigul Akhmetshina likes to describe herself as "just an ordinary girl from a small village in the middle of nowhere in Russia."

Nussbaum worked in theater in Chicago for more than 60 years.

In 2023, the theater lost many notables with long careers, including Michael Gambon, Frances Sternhagen, Glenda Jackson, Barry Humphries and Michael Blakemore. Praising those we lost makes the remembrance dear.

Richard Pilbrow, who has died aged 90, was the doyen of British theatrical lighting designers, and one of the last survivors of the team assembled by Sir Laurence Olivier in the 1960s to design the new National Theatre on the South Bank. He was also the author of the lighting designer’s bible, Stage Lighting (1970), nicknamed “the Old Testament”, and its revised 1997 edition, “the New Testament”.

Mr. Blakemore was nominated seven times for Tonys, notably for his productions of Peter Nichols’s “A Day in the Death of Joe Egg” in 1968 and Michael Frayn’s “Noises Off” in 1983. He won two directing awards in 2000: for the musical revival "Kiss Me, Kate" and for "Copenhagen."

Acclaimed in Britain, he had the unique distinction of winning awards for best musical and best play in 2000, for his Broadway revival of “Kiss Me, Kate” and “Copenhagen.”
