Instin instincts? i guess to peter first. >> im sure his staff impressed upon him the obligations of the moment. whats expected of him in this moment. remember, none of his experience as a real estate developer, as an entertainment host on television has he ever sort of found this kind of, you know, a situation. there was one moment i think when he was a builder that a helicopter with some of his top executives went down and crashed and there were fatalities. thats a closest thing i can think of...

Matthews who is our political science buff. peter, straight to you. you heard what the president said, saying no president had accomplished more than he has. is he telling the truth? >> absolutely not. he can think or dream that. if you look at other presidents have accomplished some real -- not a single piece of legislation was signed or passed by him in these last six months. he was not able to get in through congress and we need action right now with the economy, education, healthcare and hes...

Reaching across the aisle to help at this moment. i will say this i dont necessarily know its a bad thing. he said trying to say if nothing gets done its not me its them. i dont know if thats not a bad thing. this will all play out. >> peter, do you think its a bad thing shutting down the government? how does the mark and global committee react to if its a shut down? >> they wont react very well at all. i want to make two policy points. one, if you look at donald trump won the electoral vote and...

Person who can lead our country and move us forward. we have republicans and democrats saying these thing thats scary for our country. >> clappers statement is very important because think of what he did with kim jong-un in the middle of these crises. when kim jong-un said were not going to pyre the four missiles in guam, the president should have said were going to take the step to back down a bit to give a confidence measure a clan to survive and work. thats how you negotiate. thats why im con...

My feeling is if we were to continue to have jobs reports like this, the labor participation rate would go up and we would continue to see wages rise. what concerns me is most economists on both sides of the aisle see growth rate for gdp being in the high twos. better than weve had historically in this recovery but not as good as the last two quarters. the question is, can we keep up this rate of job growth if we only grow at 2.3% per year. probably not. will this turn into more take home pay? w...

The thing about the 1990s -- actually assailant and an important difference between then and now. in the 1990s we got to full employment and we stayed at full employment. in order for the gains from gdp growth to be much more broadly shared than then, that has to be the goal. the economy is definitely improving. im very impressed at the clip of which were getting better. were definitely not at a point where a really tight job market is broadly distributing the prosperity the economys generating....

Remember, that big dip in gas prices feeds into inflation so that the buying power of the average wage is going a bit further. look, on the labor market side, as much as you said, im probably a little more bullish on the report than some of your good news/bad news accounting. its true that the labor force participation rate was flat, but actually flat is pretty good, because it was falling sharply up until about a year ago. so, the stabilization in the labor force, while weve been adding all the...

25 days after the disappearance of flight 370, still very few hard facts. lets bring back our panel of experts to tackle some of the questions tweeted to us using the #370qs. mark weise and peter goelz and law enforcement analyst, tom fuentes. lets get to the questions. to peter first. could a submarine pick out ping through their s.o.n.a.r.? >> yes, a submarine could pick up the pings through its s.o.n.a.r. the u.s. submarines have very sensitive listening devices, and i think a number of us ar...

But lets go to the mix of this thing. it seems to me that republicans, members of the house, not the leadership who have to be establishment, but down the line, people from the south, people from the far west, actually the rocky mountains, the more conservative areas of the country, all theyre going to do if they support this military action is get themselves an opponent in the next election. it seems to me the safest vote for them is to say you democrats, you put together 218 in the house, 60 i...

Out to people by using the tradition and legality which people rely on. >> well, i want to stay with you because i want all of us to take a listen to something else the president had to say about the media because he did go on about the media. he didnt just say the media, he didnt just say we are bad people. he took it a step further. take a listen. >> for most part, honestly these are really really dishonest people and theyre bad people. and i really think they dont like our country, i really b...
