Some residents of Roodepoort in Gauteng are entering their second day without electricity after an explosion at a substation.

City Power technicians are gradually restoring electricity in Roodepoort after an outage caused by an explosion at the Peter Road substation on Sunday.

Joburg City Power said the Sunday morning explosion was caused by criminals attempting to steal cables from the Peter Road substation.

City Power logged nearly 2 500 calls by Wednesday morning following the overnight thunderstorms, which triggered equipment failure at various substations.

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said that they had increased resources to ensure power outages were resolved.

One person was entrapped and severely crumpled in his vehicle that was involved in a collision on the R546 in Secunda.
