The share of imports in Indias total natural gas requirement has come down from 58% in 2019 to around 44% at present. With this, the crude oil and liquefied natural gas import bill has also fallen 22.5%. If things go according to plan, the share of natural gas in Indias energy basket will more than double to 15% by 2030.

The move follows the 12th city gas distribution (CGD) bidding round, which included seven geographical areas. The bid round covers 88% of India's geographical area and 98% of its population.

He emphasized that some city gas distributors have been lax in providing connections or initiating gas supply, and PNGRB is ready to address this issue. Jain also highlighted the need for policy intervention to encourage household piped natural gas (PNG) connections.
