A boil water advisory has been issued after E. coli bacteria were found in the water supply near Phantom Ranch at Grand Canyon National Park, officials warned Friday.

E. coli bacteria has been detected in the water supply close to Phantom Ranch, the only lodging at the bottom of the canyon.

Grand Canyon park officials say the only area that was affected is Phantom Ranch and the immediate surrounding area.

Temperatures at the bottom of the canyon average near 60°C (140°F) during the summer months and can be even hotter on trails leading down because the dark-colored walls absorb heat.

A new National Park Service study says extreme heat will make future visits to Grand Canyon National Park a riskier endeavor.
