Yves here. The book profiled in this review, The Hospital, is flawed due to the author telling the story through a central character who then gets himself ejected from leadership by mismanaging a sexual harassment allegations against a staffer. However, many of its observations will still sound familiar to readers, such as medical industry workers who try to put patient care first are hopelessly caught up in a grift machine.

Healthcare advisory group hears former exec
ENNEN
MOUNT GILEAD The Morrow County Healthcare Initiative Citizens Group (MC-HIC) heard about healthcare in Williams County, Ohio, and shared their concerns about healthcare and the hospital with Phil Ennen at their May 4 meeting.
HIC Chairman Jennifer Williams brought this nationally respected expert in healthcare to Morrow County to share his experience with the group. Ennen is the subject of the book, “The Hospital,” that was released this year.
Ennen was COO and then CEO for 32 years at Bryan Hospital in Williams County. He is presently serving on Ohio’s Pandemic Response Team. He spoke first about how healthcare and hospital business has become extremely complicated since the 1980s and 90s.

When local journalist Brian Alexander was looking for the focus of his latest book “The Hospital: Life, Death, and Dollars in a Small American Town.,” the answer came easy: Bryan, Ohio.
“When I reported a story about rural hospitals for The Atlantic, I spoke to Phil Ennen, CEO of Community Hospitals and Wellness Centers, or CHWC,” said the award-wining author. “After the story came out, Phil asked me to come to Bryan, talk to some people and have a look at the hospital.
“During my visit, I realized that by using the lens of one small hospital in one small town, I could say some things not only about American medical care, but about America in general. Though every place is a little different, CHWC and Bryan are avatars for the whole country.”
