Philander Smith College officially became Philander Smith University, it was announced on Tuesday. This marks a major transition for the institution, which has now become the second HBCU in Arkansas, next to the University of Arkansas.

Tuesday was a big day for Philander Smith College as they announced they are now a university.

Philander Smith College announced on Tuesday its transition from college to university, which Interim President Cynthia Bond Hopson said means the institution is "moving forward."

This is the Methodist-affiliated HBCU’s first name change since 1882.

Philander Smith College plans to go through a name change Tuesday.
