TAUNTON After years of planning and getting government approvals, the Union Block Project which would create 38 mixed-income apartments in downtown Taunton could break ground this year.
Phillip Giffee, executive director of Neighborhood of Affordable Housing Inc., an East Boston-based nonprofit agency known for developing affordable-rate apartments which is spearheading the project, said they expect to begin construction in nine to 10 months.
NOAH plans to build five one-bedroom units, 30 two-bedroom units and three three-bedroom units inside the largely vacant second and third floors of three contiguous buildings within the Union Block which comprises five conjoined brick buildings extending from the corner of Weir and Main streets to Merchants Lane.
