Biography Ashley Bickteron is a Barbados-born American artist known for his baroque multimedia approach to exploring contemporary society. Juxtaposing photographic prints, thick oil paint, and found objects, Bickteron depicts alien figures amidst the detritus of consumer culture. “I’m interested in the liberating aspect of being totally untethered, let loose in the worst possible environments,” he explained. “I like things to be seven kinds of wrong. If they are seven kinds of wrong, sometimes the wrongs neutralize themselves.” Born in 1959 on the island of Barbados, Bickerton’s father was a linguistic scholar that traveled the world with his family before settling in Hawaii in 1972. The artist received his BFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 1982, before moving to New York where he attended the Whitney Independent Study Program.
