Three New Restaurants Are Transforming the MonOrchid Building on Roosevelt Row

Get ready for another round of Roosevelt Row musical chairs: Restauranteur Julian Wright is bringing a trio of food and drink options to the monOrchid building, a place where change has been the only constant since developer True North Studio bought the property at 214 East Roosevelt Street just over two years ago. Built by Del Webb in the late 1930s, the former warehouse became a staple of the downtown arts scene after commercial photographer Wayne Rainey bought it during the late ‘90s and turned it into a mixed-use creative space. Rainey sold the property to True North Studio for $3.5 million, ushering in a series of changes at the site. Most recently, monOrchid was home to Be Coffee and The Dressing Room restaurant. Both closed in March 2020.

Didn t Sign Up for DoorDash? Neither Did These Phoenix-Based Restaurateurs

When people started showing up at her restaurant looking for orders they said they’d placed, Carla Wade Logan got angry. “I wasn’t mad at the customers,” the owner of Carly’s Bistro is quick to point out. “I was mad at the delivery platform I never signed up for.” Logan isn’t alone in her ire at DoorDash, a food delivery service headquartered in San Francisco. Other local restaurateurs are up in arms about what they say are DoorDash’s lousy policies and unprofessional approach to delivering dinner. Food is being delivered late, some say; DoorDash is publishing out-of-date menus; they’re under- and over-charging for entrees. And then there are the drivers who turn up looking for orders that were never placed.
