Wanda Gail Woodard Stokes, 73, Pikeville, passed away Sunday, Jan. 9, 2022, at Wayne UNC Healthcare in Goldsboro with her family by her side.

On March 2, 1955, 15-year-old Claudette Colvin got on the bus to take her from school to her home. She sat in seats reserved for “colored people” with three friends.

Rosa Parks was a Black civil rights activist whose refusal to give up her bus seat to a white man ignited the American civil rights movement. Because she played a leading role in the Montgomery bus boycott, she is called the ‘mother of the civil rights movement.’
