The biggest outages in fremont with more than 3500. The peninsula more than 2400. San francisco more than 2300. There have been 1000 lightning strikes in the bay area. Maybes less than that. 800 to 1000 strikes. Most of them were just offshore. Looking at the live camera. We change the perspective. Heres golden gate bridge. The thunder lightning showers are in the north bay to point reyes. We see some distant flashes. Most of the heavy stuff is early is over. Its picking up in the southeast. The more the reporters get into these areas, the worse it seems to get. The death toll is rising overnight. At least 11 people were killed by that storm in the u. S. Another 29 in the caribbean. Heres a number thats startling. Nearly 8 million customers without power this morning across the south. The overwhelming majority of those, nearly 7 million in florida. Thats almost a third of that states population. One official is warning of a potential humanitarian crisis in the florida keys. An Aircraft Carrier is going there. Southeastern states are assessing irmas damage. It destroyed boats, tossed around debris and knocked down many trees. One shocking moment was caught on dashboard camera as a car driving along gets smashed by a falling pine tree right there. Well, it lifted up the back end of the vehicle. The dash cams owner says the driver was stunned, but otherwise okay. Down in the florida keys, the navy is searching for other storm victims who might not be as fortunate. Their helicopters are looking for the stranded and anyone in need. The keys were utterly devastated by irma. Femas administrator described the scope of the damage. 25 of the houses nushlly have been destroyed and 65 have major damage. Basically every house in the keys was impacted in some way or another. The human toll is becoming clear.
