Northeast Alabama lost 35 people, hundreds of homes on April 27, 2011

The reminders remain across the landscape in portions of DeKalb County, for those who know where to look.  They also remain on the hearts and minds of those who lost loved ones, neighbors and property to a monster EF5 storm on April 27, 2011.  It was the day of the super outbreak, when multiple tornadoes tore through Alabama, killing 238 people across the state.  In DeKalb County, the tornado hit at about 6:19 p.m. in the Lakeview community northeast of Geraldine. According to the National Weather Service, left the county at 6:56 p.m.   roughly 40 minutes that would result in the deaths of 35 people, the destruction of hundreds of homes, and damage to businesses, at least three churches and Plainview High School.

After more than 31 years, Mize’s last day with the Plainview Fire Department was Thursday. Mize has served the department in different capacities as a firefighter, equipment operator and as Fire Marshal, a position he’s held for the last 20 years. Mize has taught investigation and code inspection classes. He also has Master Certifications for Fire Fighter, Arson Investigator, Code Inspections and Peace Officer and is an Advanced EMT. During his time with the department, Mize brought the Shattered Dreams Program to Plainview High School.

According to a news release from the Kerr County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a shots fired call in gated community in a subdivision just outside the Kerrville city limits Monday around 3:41 p.m. Deputies discovered there had been a verbal disturbance that led to two residents – Hanna and Kenneth Brown – pulling guns out and exchanging gunfire. Hanna died. Brown, a 71-year-old retired U.S. Customs Officer, was not injured. The Kerr County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Rangers are investigating the case. No arrests had been made as of Thursday morning. The case will be referred to a Grand Jury.
