Shutting down nuclear reactors could cause over 5,000 premature deaths due to more polluting energy sources filling the gap, researchers have said.

MIT's study found that shutting down nuclear plants could increase air pollution. According to a new study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), shutting down nuclear power plants in the United States could lead to over 5,000 pollution-related deaths in a single year.

Nearly 20 percent of today's electricity in the United States comes from nuclear power. The U.S. has the largest nuclear fleet in the world, with 92 reactors scattered around the country. Many of these power plants have run for more than half a century and are approaching the end of their expected lifetimes.

New research claims that shutting down nuclear plants could increase air pollution and cause more deaths because many potential replacement sources for power aren't clean.

Recent events threaten to seriously diminish the well-established and generally positively viewed role of both scientific and clinical expertise in health-related public policy.

If the USA were to shut down its nuclear power plants, the pollution from the coal, gas, and oil that would be used to make up the generation shortfall would result in a worsening of air quality that could cause an additional 5200 pollution-related deaths over a single year, according to a newly published study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

An MIT study shows that if U.S. nuclear power plants are retired, the burning of coal, oil, and natural gas to fill the energy gap could cause more than 5,000 premature deaths.
