Acclaimed children's author and illustrator Eric Carle, perhaps best remembered for his classic story "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," has died at age 91, publisher Penguin Kids said on Twitter.

Carle died Sunday.

NEW YORK (AP) — Eric Carle, the beloved children’s author and illustrator whose classic “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and other works gave millions of kids some of their earliest and most cherished literary memories, has died at age 91.

Carle has more than 70 books to his name, and was known for his signature colorful style of art. His family said he died on Sunday as a result of kidney failure. He is survived by a son and daughter.
