house chief of staff on netflix house of cards. i m so happy to be here. i love how guests chime in. it s true. you are more than welcome to sit onset at all times. i m happy to have you. i love the show. i m an addict. i have to ask you given the number of real life situations or things that have gone down in washington that have become plot lines on the show, how closely do you guys follow what is happening in the capitol? i think most of us are interested in it anyway, but i think that i feel like our show is sometimes a step ahead of what happens we ll read a script and the next day it is happening in washington. right. we obviously have education reform, entitlement, all that stuff happens, but we ve had the script beforehand. i think actually the show, you
there s no boundary that says, no, don t go further than this. i had a guy on the other night, i said, the standard question, which he called me taking him down the rabbit hole. i did my sort of mental check. i said, was president obama a lim legitimately elected president? he said, i m not going down that rabbit hole. i knew you d do that. classic rabbit hole, chris. is this president the president of the united states? that is considered a trick question. well, i think, chris, it speaks to an evolution, one of the kind of plot lines that s unfolding in the president s in the white house telling us there s going to be a focus on executive action. the idea of recognizing the opposition to what it is, rachel. two things have happened in that relationship. one, the shutdown and catastrophic political consequences for the gop when the president held firm and stared them down, two, the filibuster, which was supposed to be the end of the republic and led to a bunch of people
because it is one of the only shows on television that centers around not only a female lead character, but the female experience, so to speak. certainly, there are a lot of plot lines that have to do with relationships with men, but i think at its core and heart it is about female friendships, about the particular struggles of being a 20-something in an expensive urban environment like new york with all of its attendant challenges. dunham has talked about her gender politics and how she tries to weave those into the show. i saw a couple of this season s episodes and these prescreeners that were released. that s a humble brag. is there a hash tag for that?
earlier this month is office conversation turned into a heated debate. love actually turned into a battlefield. basically every one of our co-workers got up and surrounded us fight club style as we debated loudly over the merits of the movie. it was awesome. everything ground to a halt for five or ten minutes. they took their debate to the web with dueling articles. their work garnered more than 50,000 facebook shares. i confess i was one of them. the argument is brutal and fun. the decade-old british film love actually follows nine story lines each about some version of affection, young love, familiar companionship, ill-timed lust, truly joyful anticipati anticipation. orr argues these plot lines are superficial and even immoral. i think it s an actively
tylenol-stuffed mice. that s them getting parachuted out of that helicopter! posthumously parachuting into guam. it happened just the other day. and it did, in fact, happen to save the native birds from those invasive brown snakes. that story sounded crazy. if you were drinking in a bar and the stranger in the next seat over tried to tell you that story, you would not have believed that dude at the bar and you might have asked for what he was having. you might not believe me, your tv host right now, and i am perfectly sober at the moment, but the dead mice parachuting into guam thing was true. that was last week. and now, here is this week s story that is even less believable, but apparently is also true. and it is a politics story. if political tricks were assembled purely from plot lines rejected from the tv show the sopranos for being too unrealistic, too unlikely. all right, on the first day of school this year in ft. lee, new jersey, this happened. the busiest bridge in the whol
