MANCHESTER — Over 100 people from the Northshire and beyond gathered Monday morning at First Congregational Church in Manchester to pay final respects to a beloved pillar within the community.

They were honored for their courage, bravery and social change within the Marine Corps after the first members enlisted 81 years ago.

More than 20,000 black Marines were trained at Camp Montford Point in the mid to late 1940s. Those who trained there have been awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.

The largest gathering of Montford Point Marines honored since 2012 took place Friday morning in Jacksonville.

The NC Department of Military and Veterans Affairs recognized the loss of an original Montford Point Marine and World War II veteran.
