The draft Police Bill will give additional powers to the Fiji Police Force. Minister for Defence, National Security, and Policing Inia Seruiratu said the draft Police Bill will give additional powers to effectively address new forms of crime. Seruiratu said the criminal landscape has changed over the years as police officers are now tasked with enforcing laws that are aligned to new emerging challenges such as terrorism. He said the Bill will allow officers to use modern technology to combat complex crimes and institute deterrent penalties in comparison to the outdated penalties currently in force. Seruiratu said government recognises the limitations archaic legislation has on the operations of the force.
