convicted of crimes, it shows what he's done to the party. that's what the voters expect of them. that gets to the heart of the challenge here, willie. the gop has a voter challenge. it's not a candidate issue. there are voters that don't care about trump's alleged criminality. they're not moved by it. some are. not enough of them to really back trump off his pedestal. i think the reason why last night matters is because the only issue looming over this primary is can any trump alternative consolidate votes and emerge as the sole alternative? last night, it was more muddled after the debate than it was before the debate in terms of that very question. is there any one person that can emerge as trump's alternative? you know, clearly, that has not happened yet. >> all right. "inviting a month of summer process stories by staggering three separate staff changes, that's a candidate issue, not a staff issue." is that ultimately how you see it as well? >> i think so. i think that a lot of republicans had some faith that maybe ron desantis was the next coming of ronald reagan or had the talent of barack obama. that's just not the case. he's more tim pawlenty and scott walker than anything else. i think what you're seeing is someone as they go out on the campaign trail, has a very, very awkward way in which he communicates with voters. the more voters meet him, the less they like him. they like him on paper a little bit, but they don't like him when they meet him. one of the things has to be said about this direction of the campaign. you're not going to out-racism or out-xenophobia donald trump.

senate republicans to go along? i can't think of more than three or four who would. >> i think this is some of the concerns we're hearing from more establishment, moderate house republicans, is that they are spending a lot of political energy right now trying to get these cuts through their cuts, which they need to pass with 218 republican votes, sort of an internal discussion. but they'll say, you know, these are never going to make it past a democratic controlled senate. they're never going to get biden's signature. do we end up in a similar situation you saw house republicans in after the debt ceiling? where the right flank doesn't vote for the bills. they're mad when the deal is finally made. are they back in sort of a situation they found themselves in, where the floor was shut down for a week earlier this year. >> "politico's" jordain carney,
disappointment saying colleges are stronger when they're racially diverse. >> we can't go backwards. you know, i know today's court decision is a severe disappointment to so many people including me. we cannot let the decision be a permanent setback for the country. with me right now, "politico's" white house bureau chief jon jonathan lemire at the white house, and democratic strategist and former executive director of the new york state democratic party, basil, so jonathan, first to you, every time there's a supreme court decision we hear how consequential elections are. what's the fallout you're following here? >> you just heard from president biden express real dismay at the decision. he urged colleges to consider candidates backgrounds, races, ethnicities when it comes to institutions of higher learning.
