The Office of the Patient Safety Commissioner for England has set out a three step process for how Martha’s rule should work, which would give patients and their families access round the clock to a rapid review from a critical care outreach team if they are worried about a patient’s condition.1 A high profile media campaign for Martha’s rule followed the death from sepsis of 13 year old Martha Mills in 2021.23 Her parents, Merope and Paul, said that they were not listened to when they expressed concern about Martha’s deterioration and called for changes to make it easier to ask for a second opinion.
