Wildfire recovery: Olympic athletes, fans aid McKenzie River Valley

The spectators in Blue River even got to witness one become the second-fastest Australian ever. The McKenzie International, put on by Portland Track, was the first meet held at the track since the fire burned 173,000 acres and destroyed more than 400 homes last Labor Day weekend. Proceeds from the event and the online livestream will go toward the Oregon Community Foundation s Community Rebuilding Fund to help recovery in the McKenzie River Valley.  Athletes also did not take any prize money for the meet, giving it instead to the rebuilding fund. The McKenzie Track is special to the Blue River community beyond playing host to big events like this. It was funded and built entirely by the community, with locals including creator Jeff Sherman helping lay the track by hand to finish it in 2010.

Weather, women s 400 hurdles set to sizzle on final weekend

By PAT GRAHAM Created: June 23, 2021 05:49 PM EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Dalilah Muhammad has all the prestigious credentials: Reigning world champion. Defending Olympic gold medalist. World record holder. Despite that, she doesn t always grab top billing in one of the most competitive races in track and field - the women s 400-meter hurdles. The reason - Sydney McLaughlin, the 21-year-old phenom who has been on Muhammad s heels for most of the past few seasons and even deserves some of the credit for pushing the champion toward her world-record times. Act One of their 2021 drama is expected to take place at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials Sunday. The encore could happen in Tokyo at the Olympics.
