mitch mcconnell, the senate majority leader, is on board. could be a potentially tough sell. democrats will say background checks aren t enough and some republicans say any additional gun control is a slippery slope. but at least right now the president says he will give those republicans political cover. i think my base relies very much on common sense, and they rely on me in terms of telling them what s happening. i think meaningful background checks, but i have a great relationship with the republican senators. i really think they are looking for me to give a signal. i think we will have great support and we will have to support from the democrats. the president also made the case that post-el paso and dayton is far different in terms of political reality and how he views the situation than after the parkland school shooting in florida. noteworthy, his rhetoric there on the south lawn is also a lot stronger.
