ORMC, MCH welcome first babies of 2021 - Odessa American: News Odessa Regional Medical Center has announced that the first baby of the New Year at ORMC was born at 4:48 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2021. The baby girl named Ava was 6 pounds and 19 inches long. Ava’s parents are Carla Mendez and Shawon Parker. Ava was also the first recipient of the 2021 POWER Bag, an initiative that began last year to provide resources and tools to encourage new parents to frequently read, speak and interact with their babies beginning at birth. The contents of the 2021 POWER bag include a CDC Milestone Moments Baby Booklet, a POWER Brochure, POWER Tip Sheet, Baby’s Busy Day Book, Scholastic Baby Book, POWER Magnet, Power Toy Keys, and articles on brain development and the importance of reading to your child. 3 hospitals join forces for POWER Initiative - Odessa American: Education by The POWER Initiative has announced its partnership with all three Midland/Odessa hospitals, beginning Jan. 1, 2021. Midland Memorial Hospital will join previous partners, Medical Center Hospital and Odessa Regional Medical Center, in the reading initiative partnership. POWER is an overarching plan to try to “connect all the touchpoint and through lines from birth to kindergarten or prek,” said Adrian Vega, executive director of the Education Partnership of the Permian Basin. The POWER Initiative falls under the Education Partnership of the Permian Basin. Vega said it gives “structure and focus to how we’re aligning all our resources. The whole goal is to improve kindergarten readiness. We’re literally starting at birth.
