Influential Czech-born author of the bestselling novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being

The Czech-born writer lived 50 years in Paris after emigrating in disillusionment from his Communist-ruled homeland

Milan Kundera, author of the novel “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” who lived nearly five decades in Paris after emigrating in disillusionment from his Communist-ruled homeland, has died at the age of 94.

The author of "The Joke" and "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" died in Paris. Born in Czechoslovakia, Kundera was stripped of his nationality in 1979. He was one of the few authors to have entered the prestigious editions of La Pléiade during his lifetime. He had been the victim of several macabre hoaxes on social networks before his death was announced Tuesday afternoon. He is survived by his wife, Vera, and two children.
