In 1987, an enormous complex of unplundered Moche culture tombs was unearthed at the Huaca Rajada archaeological site, near Sipán on the North coast of Peru. The most famous of the tombs belonged to El Señor de Sipán (The Lord of Sipán),

The 100-foot-long mural is of exceptional quality and sheds light on a transitional period of two pre-Incan cultures.

Sillustani is a pre-Incan burial ground on the shores of Lake Umayo, about an hour’s drive from Puno in Peru, which is a large city on the shore of Lake Titicaca. The tombs, which are built above ground in tower-like structures called chullpa, are the vestiges of the Colla people, Aymara speaking people who were conquered by the Inca in the 15th century.

In 1987, some of the most extraordinary tombs in the world were found in Sipán’s Huaca Rajada, a Moche archaeological site on the North coast of Peru, which predates the Inca by some 1,000 years.
