Ontario implements strict COVID measures as omicron cases, hospitalizations surge

Ontario Premier Rob Ford said the province faces “a tsunami of new cases in the days and weeks ahead.” He said the new measures, tentatively scheduled for the next 2-3 weeks, have a straightforward goal: to blunt the rise of the omicron wave enough to spare hospitals from being overrun, and buy the province time to get more vaccine boosters into arms.

Article content Ontario’s minister of colleges and universities says he fully expects a continued partnership between the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and both Laurentian University in Sudbury and Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, despite proposed legislation that, if passed, will make NOSM an independent institution. NOSM won’t move: Romano Back to video The decision drew rebukes from opposition politicians, including Sudbury-area MPPs France Gelinas, Jamie West and Michael Mantha, who questioned the motives of Romano and Premier Rob Ford in making the move, as well as its timing, and wondered aloud if it could be a precursor to NOSM’s move out of the city.
