Family escapes fire in East Beth Monday

A family of three escaped a house fire in East Bethlehem Township Monday morning. Fire crews from Washington and Greene counties responded to the 10 a.m. fire in the 300 block of Main Street, only a few hours after returning from battling another fire at Sunset Marina the night before. “I was at the fire station when the whistle blew, which is rare,” said East Bethlehem Volunteer Fire Department Chief Mark Giovanelli. The family was home when the fire started in the one-story house, Giovanelli said. The two adults were in bed, he said, when their 6-year-old discovered the fire. Giovanelli said the man residing there told him that when the child woke him, he “looked out and all he saw was the orange glow of the fire in the next room.”

Building at Sunset Marina burns down

Several fire departments from Washington and Greene counties responded to a fire Sunday night at Sunset Marina, Clarksville, Greene County. According to Greene County Emergency Management Director Donald Mason, the fire was called in about 8 p.m. A building on the property was destroyed and some material leaked into Ten Mile Creek, he said. “No other boats or anything caught fire, as far as I’m aware,” Mason said. “There was some leakage of oil or gasoline or some similar material that got into Ten Mile Creek.” Fayette County and Washington County hazardous material teams responded to the call, as did a state Department of Environment Protection representative, according to Richard Policz, operations and training officer for Greene County Emergency Management.

Greene County plans to charge $300 per child to participate in this year’s summer day camp program. Commission Chairman Mike Belding said officials are seeking donors to help reduce costs associated with the day camps. The announcement came following the commissioners’ most recent public meeting during which residents expressed concerns about the fee, imposed because of the county’s current financial crisis. During the public comment portion of the April 8 meeting, two residents said they were informed the county is planning to charge $300 per child for the six-week camp, which in years past had been held free of charge. One resident said he was concerned because his fiancée is a single mother who counts on the free day camp, and would not be able to afford the fee. Another asked if the board had reached out to any companies to help pay for the camp, and said she felt the $300 charge – as well as Belding’s statement the day camp was providing a service
