Groups form alliance to say no to new town proposals

WINCHESTER countryside campaigners have formed a new alliance to fight plans for local new towns. Three Winchester campaign groups have united to oppose building new towns as a way of delivering housing targets. The Countryside Charity CPRE Hampshire, Save South Winchester Campaign Group (SSWCG) and the Dever Society are urging Winchester City Council to reject building new towns in their new Local Plan. The city council published ‘Your Place Your Plan: Strategic Issues and Priorities Consultation’, the first opportunity for Winchester residents to have their say on the new Local Plan, the blueprint for development until 2038. New towns are one of four housing options proposed.

Winchester Lib Dems come under fire over local plan

WINCHESTER Conservatives have criticised the Liberal Democrats over the emerging local plan. They say the Lib Dems have refused to “rule out” hugely controversial proposals for new towns at Royaldown between Oliver’s Battery and Hursley, and Micheldever Station. The Lib Dems say the inclusion of both proposals on a developers’ wish list does not indicate their support. The SHELAA lists must be regularly drawn up and both were on the list when the Conservatives controlled the city council until May 2020. Local authorities across the South were expecting to have to plan for far more housing after the Government published a white paper on planning last autumn.
