B.C.-based company Paper Excellence says it is indefinitely ceasing its paper operations at one of its Vancouver Island facilities in two months. In an announcement Thursday, the company said its Catalyst Crofton facility, south of Nanaimo, B.C., will stop producing paper in early December, a move thats expected to affect at least 150 workers.

U.K.-based Drax Group Plc. has increased its share of B.C. wood-pellet production with an agreement to buy a Princeton production plant.

VANCOUVER — The BC government must immediately disclose how many logs from publicly owned forests are turned directly into wood pellets at mills owned by the  Drax Group, BC’s biggest wood pellet maker, says a forest industry union, conservation and public policy organizations. 

A U.K. company with a growing monopoly over British Columbia’s wood pellet industry must be forced to divest some of its holdings to protect the province’s forests and the jobs of forest industry workers, a coalition of unions and environmental and public policy groups say.
