(Bloomberg) Democrats in Congress are trying to increase the clout of small donors, yet a provision in their voting-rights legislation risks favoring candidates from either party who hold polarizing views and widening ideological divisions on Capitol Hill.
(Bloomberg) Democrats in Congress are trying to increase the clout of small donors, yet a provision in their voting-rights legislation risks favoring candidates from either party who hold polarizing views and widening ideological divisions on Capitol Hill.
As part of the sweeping voting-rights bill, House candidates who opt into public financing would get a 600% match for individual contributions of as much as $200, a move intended to lessen the power of deep-pocketed backers. Small-dollar donors, however, tend to give more to candidates who draw national attention as firebrands meaning the provision could end up rewarding partisanship.

U.S. Rep. Tom Reed is definitely testing the waters when it comes to a run for New York state governor.
While wading through topics that included a controversial Congressional Georgia Republican and New York state Gov. Andrew Cuomo, the Corning Republican began simmering in a conference call with area media on Thursday. His emotions, while in check, appeared to signal a potential future battle with the three-term Empire State incumbent.
It’s sure hard to tell that New York state has a budget deficit, isn’t it?
Chautauqua County is proposing to buy the 215 E. Third St., Jamestown, building it is using through a licensing agreement with GPatti LLC in the former Ray Nelson Service Station.
To be clear, the project being proposed does make sense. CARTS needs a permanent home. Business incubator space downtown has long been needed. Providing some sort of amenity to CARTS riders waiting for their bus would also be a nice addition. Chautauqua County has received a $160,000 grant from the state Transportation Department to buy the building. The improvements would likely come later.
