Hank Azaria has apologized to Indian-Americans for his portrayal of convenience store owner Apu on The Simpsons
The character has appeared in hundreds of episodes of The Simpsons since its debut in 1990
In 2017, a documentary The Problem With Apu claimed the character promoted racist stereotypes about Indian immigrants
Azaria told The Armchair Expert podcast he didn t want to make a knee-jerk reaction to what could ve just been 17 hipsters in Brooklyn
He says he spent a year doing the work to learn why Apu was offensive, and now believes it has contributed to structural racism
