Thousands of tonnes of dried haricot beans are imported to the UK each week by the major brands, with produce coming from the US, Canada, Ethiopia and China.

Scientists are hopeful that a 12-year project to develop a commercial version of the bean used in baked beans that can be grown in Britain will produce results this summer. If it succeeds, it will reduce the need to import the haricot variety from around the world.
