Students gathered on Thursday after the university announced plans to eliminate 20 of its programs last month.

The cuts come after a contentious, months-long review of academic programs that many faculty and students criticized.

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro’s academic portfolio review wrapped up earlier in January. There were recommendations for more than a dozen program cuts, and the stated goal was to collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators to better meet student needs. But many say the process was flawed. 

The university also said it will eliminate three graduate degree programs and about a dozen total majors, certificates, concentrations and minors.
