A former slave built a striking residence in Galesville 42 years after gaining his freedom.

Carroll County officials held a ceremony Tuesday morning to celebrate the opening of the first phase of the county’s newest park, Westminster Veterans Memorial Park on Crest Lane.

Four Carroll County municipalities will each receive $138,687 in state grant funding to pay for park improvement projects this year.

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — The Maryland Board of Public Works will spend more than $5.2 million on turning a historically Black beach on the Chesapeake Bay into a public city park. The money will go towards preserving the legacy of a beach used by the Black community during a time of segregation.

In all, the upcoming year’s capital budget general fund includes $62 million for Buckley’s legacy projects as well as other initiatives he’s kicked off in recent months including the acquisition of a historic beachfront property near Carr’s Beach, and renovations to the Stanton Community Center.
