Medical debt continues to impact Americans across the country at an insidious rate. The United States spends $3.5 trillion on health care per year. This casual epidemic shows no signs of abating as many people learn to navigate life in perpetual debt.

American workers could accumulate wealth in the thousands (in some cases, hundreds of thousands) of dollars through a Social Security reform that includes personal retirement accounts. This increased wealth would be in addition to a maintenance level of Social Security benefits and could help millions of parents, their children, and their grandchildren to attain greater economic security and independence through their own personalized retirement assets.

The governor and Democrats have promoted this plan as a way to reduce taxes on retirement income, but not all retirement income is treated equally.

On January 24, 2018, Nobel Prize–winning economist Angus Deaton published an op-ed in The New York Times entitled “The U.S. Can No Longer Hide from Its Deep Poverty Problem.” According to Deaton, 5.3 million Americans are living on less than $4.00 per day and “are as destitute as the world’s poorest people.… [Their] suffering, through material poverty and poor health, is as bad [as] or worse than that of the people in Africa or in Asia.”
