i m here with alex and ryan. alex wants to talk about an interesting program run by the special olympics called unified sports. well, me and my brother a couple years ago joined this program called unified sports. and they have volleyball and basketball. i feel like it s a great way for special needs kids like him to help gain more friends throughout the school and stuff like that. i think it is really important for our country, to, you know, grasp does more need to be done to . include special needs students in terms of extracurricular activities? we often say they re often the first to be forgotten. luke, i so appreciate your comment, guys, because it is a reminder that i think that we have talked a little bit about the issues of class and race, but it is a reminder that the issue of difference is much broader than that and our commitment to social mobility in public education means every kind of student, so i appreciate that. mara, you have another student with you. i m he
middle school in as an author, what are some solutions you have to what we ve discussed here today? a major thing for students in middle school is goal-setting. that was one thing that really helped me. being able to set goals and know where you re headed for and no what you re trying to accomplish in school is a good thing. i know i have four siblings. my family is very busy. and we re on a very tight schedule. me knowing like when i have to get my homework done, when i m going to do sports was definitely a thing for me. goal-setting is a definite thing. great. thank you very much. scheduling, that s something we heard from the panel earlier, it s key for students to be on a predictable schedule. i read his book last night to my daughter who is starting middle school. luke, you ve got some folks with you over there. i m here with alex and ryan. alex wants to talk about an interesting program run by the
boy were they amazing. welcome to early start, i m zoraida sambolin. and i m john berman. 5:00 a.m. in the east. what we re all talking about is morning is politics. after 36 hours joined at the hip, mitt romney and his new running mate are going their separate ways today. the former massachusetts governor says he s happy with his new teammate. at one point, ryan teared up with emotion during a stop in wisconsin. on 60 minutes, romney praised his vp pick for being a lot like him. of course, the president is weighing in, too. this is a man who s dedicated the last 14 years working in washington in ways that are not highly partisan. this is a man who s also analytical. he s a policy guy. people know him as a policy guy. that s one of the reasons he has such respect on both sides of the aisle. i m a policy guy, believe it or not. i love policy. i love solving tough problems. congressman ryan is a decent man. he is a family man. he s an articulate spokesman for gove
but this really is one program in a vast sea of department of justice activity and you know, somebody said during the break we re talking about fast and furious but we re not talking about gun control. i think that person was me. exactly. the idea, the notion, the reality is here, eric, we could be talking about the war on drugs and how ineffective it s been. we could be talking about drug control. but we re talking about eric holder s e-mail. i thought the republicans were in favor of handing out guns to everyone. it s confusing what their position is on this. the other thing that s getting lost is how much part of the status quo this is. the program itself is a program run under the bush administration, very similar kind of gun smuggling operations to try to bust the drug cartels in mexico, and the use of executive privilege itself is very commonplace. it s the first time obama s wielded it but it s not out of line for what presidents have done, including george w. bush. so n
to prevent terrorism than he was to take responsibility for a program run by his department called fast and furious that put illegal guns in the hands of mexican drug lords and resulted in the murder of an american border agent. and finally, there s the really stupid vote of the senate this week to kill a bill by senator tom coburn which would have implemented a government accounting office recommendation that would have eliminated $10 billion of duplicative government programs. sounds real simple. a government agency finds $10 billion of pure waste of your money, and recommends we turn off the leaky faucet. the senate s response? defeat the bill and turn the spigots on full, and that is stupid. comedian ron white has it right when he says this. you can t fix stupid. that s right, ron. you can t fix stupid. and you know, in most cases, you really can t, but when stupid gets elected, you can fix it.
