South Dakota State University: Data-Driven Model Helps Orchestrate Traditional, Renewable Energy

BROOKINGS, South Dakota, May 25 (TNSRes) South Dakota State University issued the following news: Two SDSU power systems researchers are developing statistical models that will help orchestrate the integration of renewable energy into the electricity grid. Associate professor Reinaldo Tonkoski and assistant professor Tim Hansen of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science have developed a data-driven model to determine the output of inverter-based renewable energy sources, such as wind turbines and solar panels, and subsequently a control system that helps them play well with traditional power sources. For the U.S. Department of Energy project, Tonkoski and Hansen are collaborating with researchers from the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez. Their objective is to ensure voltage and frequency stability in the grid while utilizing more environmentally friendly energy sources.
