Fertility patients at two clinics in England have been exposed to a faulty egg and embryo-freezing solution that might have impaired their chances of having children, the industry regulator has said.

Freezing eggs or embryos is a standard part of fertility treatment, allowing women to have families later in life or before undergoing medical treatment for conditions such as cancer.

Another fertility clinic has been confirmed using the same "faulty" product which is feared to have destroyed frozen eggs and embryos belonging to 136 women.

Jessop Fertility, which is run by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, may also have used the faulty product.

Activist researchers are calling for much easier access to human embryos in order to pursue controversial experiments.

In addition to incest risks, experts say it can be psychologically damaging for children of donors to find out they have hundreds of genetic half-siblings.
