IBM unveiled a suite of new artificial intelligence (AI) services on Monday ahead of its virtual IBM Think 2021 conference.
The new features include software that teaches AI how to translate code, a cloud migration service, and more functions for the firm s Watson Assistant.
The most interesting of the announcements was a Rosetta Stone-like service for programming code called CodeNet , which is an expansive dataset designed to teach AI and machine learning systems how to translate code. It comprises some 14 million snippets and 500 million lines of code spread across more than 55 legacy and active languages, such as Cobol, Java, C++, and Python. The dataset is constructed in a way that allows for bidirectional translation, enabling Cobol legacy code to be translated into Java, for example.

Jackie Davalos (Bloomberg) International Business Machines Corp. is rolling out a new product that will help businesses automate tasks, capitalizing on the rise of chat bots and virtual assistants during the pandemic and taking another step in its pivot toward cloud services and artificial intelligence.
The tool, called Watson Orchestrate, uses artificial intelligence to select and sequence the prepackaged skills needed to perform a task across sales, human resources, or operations functions. It will be compatible with Slack Technologies Inc. and email as well as connect to business applications like Salesforce.com Inc., SAP SE and Workday Inc. The product is expected to be available later this year.

IBM is using its 2021 Think Conference to tout its advances in artificial intelligence (AI), including Project CodeNet.
One of the biggest challenges many companies face is translating existing codebases into another language. Artificial intelligence (AI) promises to help alleviate that problem, but requires extensive training to properly translate from one programming language to another.
IBM Research has released Project CodeNet, a dataset aimed at training AIs in source-to-source translation.
A large dataset aimed at teaching AI to code, it consists of some 14M code samples and about 500M lines of code in more than 55 different programming languages, from modern ones like C++, Java, Python, and Go to legacy languages like COBOL, Pascal, and FORTRAN.

IBM Corp. is pushing the envelope on hybrid cloud and artificial intelligence with a number of key announcements early Tuesday ahead of its Think 2021 event, chiefly aimed at accelerating its customer’s digital transformation strategies.
One of the main highlights of today’s announcements is a new Auto SQL capability within IBM’s Cloud Pak for Data offering that automates data access and management without needing to move it first. The company also unveiled a new, AI-based tool for modernizing applications and workloads to run in hybrid cloud environments, plus new AI capabilities in Watson and advancements that should help to scale up quantum computing to more use cases.
