PHI union wants travel restrictions 25 December 2020 04:11 am - 1
The Public Health Inspector’s Union of Sri Lanka urged the Government and relevant authorities that travel restrictions be imposed to prevent people from crossing provincial borders during the festive season as the high number of Covid-19 cases reported in the Western Province.
The Union’s Chairman Upul Rohana said that Covid patients were increasing in the community at an unprecedented level.he said a large number of patients continue to be reported from the Colombo Municipal Council area in the Colombo District.
“Similar situations are being reported in Gampaha and Kalutara districts as well,” he said.
The Public Health Inspectors Union of Sri Lanka (PHIUSL) today urged the Government to isolate the Western Province (WP) and impose travel restrictions among other districts until January 1.
PHIUSL Secretary M. Balasooriya told the Daily Mirror that the areas that come within Colombo Municipality in the WP have been alerted with higher risk of COVID-19 spread.
Also there is a tendency of emerging sub clusters from outside the WP, he said. People might move to other districts to celebrate Christmas and New year, and that could trigger the spreading of virus even further, he said.
Therefore the union requested the Government to isolate the WP and to implement travel restrictions among other districts to curb the situation.
