Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has said “unacceptable” scenes at a site slated to house 160 asylum seekers “turned to violence” last night and gardaí were “disgracefully” attacked by protestors.
A quiet tension hung over River Lodge House in Newtownmountkennedy, Co Wicklow on Friday morning as the anger of the explosive scenes the prior evening dissipated, the stand-off between gardaí and protestors still evident, though more distant – and now the two groups were no longer alone.
Six people were arrested, gardaí “came under attack” and fires were lit at a site slated to house 160 asylum seekers in Newtownmountkennedy, Co Wicklow, on Thursday night.
