Kicks of Strike with Service and March through Belize City If you went to any government offices today and wondered where the staff was, well they were very likely on the streets of Belize City. News Five followed the Public Service Union members from their opening church service to their march on Belize City.   Paul Lopez, Reporting Today marks the first day of strike action for the Public Service Union of Belize. The day began with a church service at the King’s Park Nazarene church.  After service, the P.S.U., Belize National Teachers Union, the Nurses Association of Belize, and the Association of Public Service Senior Managers went on a march through the streets of Belize City. President of the PSU, Gerald Henry told News Five that he was thrilled with the turnout of PSU members, which he estimated to be hundreds, from communities across the country.

  Dean Flowers “Absolutely not Paul, I think those media houses with whom the joint unions, and more importantly the P.S.U. has engaged over the years, knows who they are. We do not engage with political media houses. Our concern of course that some of the permanent media houses, there are period of times when we may want to question their Independence. But, at the end of the day, as long as they are operating within certain standards and guidelines, we look past political bias. It has nothing to do with politics.   I am left to wonder if it is that the current administration sees us as a political threat or a viable third party why they have taken the route they have taken to attack the Unions via political ads. This is a new low.”

Goes after Minister of Health and FinSec This afternoon, just as most people were preparing for the long weekend, the Public Service Union of Belize issued a release blasting the “posturing and hypocrisy of the government” only days before the Joint Unions are set to resume negotiations with G.O.B.   The union calls out the Minister of Health and Wellness for flagrant political interference and accuses his advisors on the transition team of “political victimization, bullying and intimidation of career public officers.”  The P.S.U. says it has copies of several termination letters signed by the C.E.O. in the ministry dismissing public officers without any valid or justified reasons.  They criticize Prime Minister John Briceño for his “inability to reign in the Minister of Health and Wellness and his political lackeys.”
