East Africa's free press still under threat, global survey shows

THE STANDARD NATIONAL Journalists protest in Nairobi after frequent attacks on members of the fourth estate. [File] Today is World Press Freedom Day, and this year’s theme focuses on ‘Information as a public good’. This day remains a crucial one for media professionals and citizens who believe in a free press as the cornerstone of democracy. Reporters without Borders (RSF) last week released the 2021 World Press Freedom Index evaluating the state of journalism in 180 countries and territories. The report has been published every year since 2002. This year’s index shows that free journalism, the main vaccine against disinformation, was completely or partly curtailed in 73 per cent of the 180 countries ranked by the organisation.

What would Kinoti do in an editorial planning meeting?

THE STANDARD OPINION Director Directorate of Criminal Investigations George M. Kinoti displaying firearms (inset, right) surrendered to the police by Citizen TV. [Wilberforce Okwiri, Standard] George Kinoti doesn’t need a gun to shoot himself in the foot. His tongue does an impeccable job. Whenever he is rambling, the organ wags intermittently, sticking out like that of a heavy-tongued serpent. His isn’t the straight-shooting flick made by the crawling reptile banished from Eden many centuries ago. But that’s as far as the differences between the two go. Just like the biblical character, Kinoti’s tongue has landed him in trouble more times than he would wish.
