When Mysuru royalty popularised vaccine

When Mysuru royalty popularised vaccine © Provided by The Times of India MYSURU: The early years of the 19th century were a period of scientific and social ferment in the United Kingdom. One of the greatest breakthroughs in medicine — the vaccine for the deadly smallpox disease — was developed by English physician Dr Edward Jenner in that period. In faraway Mysuru, which was an English Colony, members of the royal family were among those who volunteered to take the vaccination to popularise its use among the people. The then Maharani Lakshamammanni took the lead in getting other members of the royal family to take the vaccine. Her daughter-in-law, who was the wife of Mummadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, was the first to take the vaccine for the disease — a historic incident that was committed to history by Ireland-born painter Thomas Hickey, who rendered it in oil on canvas.
