UniversalChristopher Nolan's Oscar-nominated epic Oppenheimer has another record to boast about: Variety reports the acclaimed movie's debut on Peacock beat the streamer's previous record holder, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. As reported, the R-rated historical drama launched on the streaming service on February 16, and while the trade explains exact numbers were not released — a common move with streamers — the Universal film managed a bigger opening weekend viewership for Peacock than did Mario, which hit the streaming service in August. It took nearly seven months for Oppenheimer to make what's known as its "pay-one" streaming debut on Peacock — that is, an exclusive run on a single streaming platform — and evidently audiences were eager to watch, despite the movie making more than $957 million worldwide in theaters since it debuted on July 21, 2023.Copyright © 2024, ABC Audio. Dana Edelson/NBCU Photo BankIn October 2004, Ashlee Simpson's music career was derailed after she was caught lip-syncing on an episode of Saturday Night Live. Looking back on the incident during a podcast interview, she says she should have stuck to her guns and refused to perform that night. While appearing on Broad Ideas with Rachel Bilson and Olivia Allen, Ashlee reveals that the day of the performance, she woke up unable to speak because of nodules on her vocal cords. She wrote a note to the SNL folks — because she couldn't talk — explaining the situation and insisting, "I will not go on. I don't care."But, she claims, she was told to perform to prerecorded vocals. She warned SNL, "My band has never practiced this, this is not going to go well. I can’t do this.” But she did it anyway. Sure enough, when she started her second song, the vocal track from "Pieces of Me" started playing by accident, exposing her lip-syncing. Ashlee did a goofy dance and then walked offstage.During the goodbyes, she attempted to explain herself, saying her band started playing the wrong song and that she was sorry. On the podcast, Ashlee says she's since learned "the power of my no" and added, "The power of me saying 'absolutely not' ... that’s what I would go back and say.”"It was a humbling moment for me, I had the #1 song ... it was, like, everything was about to go somewhere and then it was like, 'Woah,' the humility of not even [understanding] what grown-a** people would say about you ... awful, awful things," Ashlee continues. "It was so hard to tune that out, to find my strength, to get up and go again."Copyright © 2024, ABC Audio. All rights reserved.

Atlantic RecordsNu King, Jason Derulo's first album since 2015, is out now. The album's 27 tracks include many of the singles Jason's released since 2015, as well as new material. Jason explains why he wanted to put both older and new songs on the record."It was important for me to have all these songs because there's songs like 'Swalla,' 'Acapulco,' 'Take You Dancing,' that don't have a home, and I wanted them to have a home. But also, I have a lot of new material that I wanted people to hear.," Jason tells ABC Audio. He says the new songs are "even more grown-up," adding, "I always try to reinvent myself."  The album's title, he says, is inspired by his personal journey."With all the things that I've done in my life ... I never became close to the person that I wanted to become," he explains. "And I feel like in 2023, I went into this cocoon phase ... and I worked my a** to become the person that I've always wanted to become. So ... 2024 is when I step into the 'ideal Jason Derulo.'"The album includes multiple collaborations, including Jason's new hit "Spicy Margarita." It interpolates the 1954 Dean Martin standard "Sway," and features Michael Bublé singing the hook. Jason says Michael also indirectly inspired the song."It was his idea in a way, because he said the words, 'I'm surprised more people don't use the American Songbook, because it is the genesis of what pop music is, today,'" Jason explains. "And I was like, 'Hold that thought.'""Then I went into the studio and put this together with some friends, and the next day or two, I sent him a skeleton of what it is today," he laughs. "And he was like, 'Jason, you're a f******* genius!'"Copyright © 2024, ABC Audio. All rights reserved.

Disney/Randy HolmesOn Olivia Rodrigo's upcoming GUTS World Tour, fans will learn that that's the way the cookie crumbles. Or, rather, that's the way the Crumbl Cookies. Olivia has teamed up with Crumbl brand cookies to create a signature treat that will be available in the brand's stores across North America during the tour. Crumbl stores near each stop on the tour will carry the cookie for a week leading up to the shows.  The cookie is purple, in keeping with the aesthetic of GUTS. Specifically, it's two purple-colored vanilla cookies with a layer of vanilla buttercream and triple berry jam in the middle. It's rolled in sprinkles and topped with a star-shaped cutout. Olivia has posted a photo of herself holding one of the oversize cookies, and it's as big as her hand. The cookie first goes on sale February 19 in stores in and around Palm Desert, California, leading up to the first show in the tour, which is February 23. As part of the deal, you can win a chance to see Olivia's show in Salt Lake City on July 31 and an autographed box of cookies. SGranitz/WireImageAn in-the-works biopic about the Bee Gees may have found its director. Deadline reports that Oscar-nominated director Ridley Scott, best known for such films as Thelma & Louise and Gladiator, is in talks to helm the Paramount Pictures film about the '70s disco legends. Paramount has been working on the film for quite a while, obtaining the rights to the band’s story from the Gibb family in 2019. It also gained the rights to the group’s music, which means the songs will likely be featured in the film. Barry Gibb, the only surviving member of the sibling trio, which also included his late brothers Robin and Maurice, is on board as executive producer. Scott, who recently completed directing a sequel to Gladiator, actually has a history with the Bee Gees. In the '70s, when he was trying to launch his directing career, the group’s manager Robert Stigwood was trying to get into the movie business. He hired Scott to direct a medieval film, Castle, which was supposed to star the brothers. The film was never made. The Bee Gees have sold over 120 million records worldwide, thanks to hit albums like the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever, which won five Grammys, including Album of the Year. Their hits include such songs as “Night Fever,” “Stayin’ Alive,” “Jive Talking” and “You Should Be Dancing." Copyright © 2024, ABC Audio. All rights reserved.

Jeff Spicer/Getty Images for Warner Bros. PicturesJust when you thought the star-studded cast of Dune: Part Two couldn’t shine any brighter, it's now confirmed Anya Taylor-Joy is part of the film’s ensemble. The actress walked the sand-filled red carpet of the London premiere of Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi sequel on Thursday, confirming her appearance in the project. She posed with her fellow co-stars, which include A-listers Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler and Florence Pugh. Rumors swirled online in the days leading up to its world premiere about Taylor-Joy possibly appearing in the movie. It all started when fans noticed the film-sharing social media app Letterboxd listed Taylor-Joy in the credits of Dune: Part Two for a short period of time. While the credit has since been deleted, screenshots circulated, fueling hype about a potential appearance from the actress. Variety confirmed Taylor-Joy does appear in the film as a major character from the franchise that they did not spoil. Dune: Part Two arrives in theaters on March 1. Copyright © 2024, ABC Audio. ABC/Eric McCandlessMusic manager Martin Kirkup died February 4 at age 75, and one of his clients, Katy Perry, has now taken to Instagram to pay tribute to him — and to reveal that he approved of her new music. "It’s taken me a little while to make this post…something about posting it makes it all feel, final," she writes. "I must respectfully take a moment and speak on how special he was and is to me." Noting that Kirkup was one of her managers for nearly 20 years, Katy describes him as "one of my protectors," who was "vigilant about getting me what I deserved and celebrated the headstrong female I am." "Martin and I got to climb so many wonderful professional mountains and have thoroughly enjoyed the views together - traveling, tasting, learning, celebrating, leaning into the fullness and beauty of life," she adds. "Martin left this dimension with no stones unturned!" "Three days before he passed, he finally got to hear some of what I have been working on and the joy and love that it holds," she says. "I could tell he was excited for the future, and I was so glad I had that last moment to make him proud in my own little way." Katy says she believes Martin was somehow communicating with her after he passed, because she kept seeing her favorite number, 143 (which counts the letters in each word of "I love you"), the day after he passed. "I believe our angels and loved ones always want to talk with us… if we are willing to listen," she concludes. "I hear you Martin, and 143 back to you." Copyright © 2024, ABC Audio.
