Gino Piroli: Last year has brought anger, loss

I’ve been writing this column, some 1,200 or so, for the News and then the Times since my retirement from the post office in 1988. It’s been a while since I last wrote a column, and it would be an understatement to say 2020 brought about many unusual circumstances. I’ve lived a long and full life, including the Great Depression and service in World War II, but it goes without saying nothing in those many years prepared me for this experience.
I’ll reach my 95th birthday on March 6, and I’m angry that the result of the COVID-19 virus that has been thrust upon us has deprived me of a year of the few I have remaining. Angry that I haven’t been able to see and embrace my sons but for only a few brief moments. Angry because with any type of leadership on a national scale much of this continuing and devasting problem might have been less tragic.
